Pharmaceutical products must always come with information on correct intake and dosage, as well as possible risks and side effects. They must also carry certain kinds of legal information. For doctors, pharmacists and patients, the most important source of such information is the leaflet. Thus it is an essential part of pharmaceutical packaging.
This is championed by the MLPS organisation, which focuses on standardising and improving the communication of medical information. It is actively involved in their efforts to improve medicines information and communication for the patient. The MLPS forms a unit within the European Carton Makers Association, of which Faller Packaging is also a member.

Leaflets nowadays have to perform a growing number of tasks. To comply with the EC Readability Guideline, they must provide up to 30 percent more space for the text. Increasingly, they also include icons or pictures showing how to take medication and comply with the therapy. These requirements create a need for more space and larger formats, making it harder to manufacture and fold package leaflets using conventional production methods.
